Matt Maye is a talented singer/songwriter whose songs reflect remarkable honesty and truth. His insightful lyrics and carefully crafted melodies come together in a singular expression of what it means to be alive. Through his music he gives form to the love and loss we experience as well as the hope that keeps us going. Maye's sincere vocals and guitar playing seem to effortlessly reach his audience through the universal appeal of his songs. He is tangible proof of music as it is meant to be: emotional, powerful, and transforming.
With the release of his debut EP, Matt Maye began to make his mark on the music world. Halfway There, a 5 song EP, quickly received radio and internet play in the US, Canada, and Australia. On the strength of the EP, Matt became a favorite performer on the club scene where he gained a loyal following among live music fans. He toured regionally to great success and followed that up with a three week tour of Ireland. Playing shows around the country, the tour culminated in a showcase at the prestigious Ruby Sessions in Dublin, which has featured the likes of Damien Rice, Joshua Radin, Glen Hansard, and James Blunt, among many others.
Matt Maye returned from Ireland and in a 1920s era Baptist Church turned music studio in Austin, TX he began work on what would become his first full length album. Here or Somewhere Else is a musical journey through love, betrayal, grief, and redemption. The opening track, "Black Star in the Midnight Sky", tells of a deceived lover fading out of the beloved's sight. From there we hear of betrayal and guilt on "Don't Wait for Me, Judas", the ambiguity of conflicted love on "Halfway There", and reverent pleas from the heart on "Your Dark Eyes" and "O' Mary Rose". The album ends with the sparse, acoustic strains of "When You're Gone" and is interspersed with moments of hope and optimism on both "Right Beside You" and "I Think It's Going to Be All Right". Musically, Here or Somewhere Else is textured with an array of instrumentation ranging from the driving acoustic guitar many of the tracks are centered on to a variety of keyboards, accordion, and even the uilleann pipes. In the end, though, the arrangements serve to augment the songs themselves and the stories they tell, which is why this album resonates so strongly with the listener.
